Screening & Early Detection

Early detection saves lives. The earlier breast cancer is found, the easier it is to treat and cure. Learn a little bit about screening below or visit our screening page for a complete picture of the process.

Types of Screening

  • Clinical breast exams, where a health professional physically examines your breasts for potential issues.
  • Mammograms, an X-ray of the breasts that can detect cancer before it causes any symptoms.
  • Breast MRI (for high-risk individuals), contrast enhanced imaging used to image the breasts of women at high risk for developing breast cancer.

When to Start Screening

If you're of average risk, regular screenings should start at age 40. If you’re at higher risk (family history/genetic factors), you may need to start earlier. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.
