Loma Linda University (LLU) is dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful, and Christ‑centered learning environment. Guided by the LLU values, we believe that each person is created in the image of God and deserving of dignity and respect; therefore, we maintain a zero‑tolerance position toward hazing in any form.

This aligns with the Federal Stop Campus Hazing Act and the California Stop Campus Hazing Act.

This applies to all students, employees, student organizations, clubs, teams, honor societies, and any LLU‑affiliated groups, whether activities occur in any program or activity operated, sponsored, or recognized by LLU, including:

  • On campus
  • Off campus
  • In clinical or professional settings
  • During travel or retreats
  • Online or in digital spaces

Hazing is prohibited regardless of location, intent, or organizational approval.

Definition

Hazing is any intentional, knowing, or reckless act—regardless of a person’s willingness to participate—that:

  • Occurs in connection with joining, affiliating with, or maintaining membership in a group; and
  • Creates a risk beyond normal campus life or causes physical, emotional, or psychological harm.

Hazing may also violate other University policies, including the Code of Conduct and Harassment and Discrimination Policy.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical abuse (paddling, hitting, burning, branding)
  • Throwing substances or objects at a person
  • Excessive exercise, sleep deprivation, or forced fatigue
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures
  • Coerced ingestion of alcohol, drugs, food, or other substances
  • Forced nudity or simulated sexual acts
  • Physical restraint or confinement
  • Emotional intimidation, humiliation, or degradation
  • Fake branding or cutting
  • Sensory deprivation
  • Activities involving criminal acts
  • Abductions or “kidnapping” scenarios
  • Mistreatment of animals
  • Demeaning or abusive conduct
  • Coercing violations of LLU policy
  • Pressuring individuals to harass others
  • Unreasonable chores or acts of servitude
  • Requiring conspicuous or inappropriate apparel
  • Activities that interfere with academic, clinical, religious, or family obligations

Consent & Bystander Responsibility

  • Consent is not a defense. Social pressure undermines genuine consent.
  • Passive participation, witnessing hazing without reporting it, is also a violation of the Hazing policy. Failure to report known or suspected hazing may itself be a Hazing policy violation.

Employee Responsibilities

Faculty, staff, advisors, and supervisors are prohibited from participating in or ignoring hazing. Faculty, staff, advisors, and supervisors who become aware of suspected hazing are required to promptly report it through the University’s reporting channels.

Violations may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Reporting & Investigation

Reports of hazing may be reviewed by:

  • LLUH Security
  • Provost
  • VP of Student Experience
  • Human Resources
  • Program or School Administration

Investigations may include interviews, evidence review, and referral to appropriate disciplinary bodies.

Reports of hazing may be submitted in person, by phone, or by email. Anonymous reports are permitted and will be reviewed to the extent possible based on the information provided.

Disciplinary Action

Students or employees found responsible for hazing may face:

  • Suspension or dismissal
  • Termination of employment
  • Loss of organizational recognition
  • Other sanctions outlined in the Student Handbook or Employee Handbook

Hazing may also violate California law and can subject individuals and organizations to civil liability and criminal penalties, in addition to University discipline.

Hazing Prevention and Education

LLU provides ongoing hazing prevention education, including hazing identification and prevention, bystander intervention, anonymous reporting options, and strategies for building group cohesion without hazing.

Training is required for:

  • All incoming students
  • Student organizations
  • Faculty, staff, and advisors

These training and prevention efforts are provided in accordance with federal and California anti‑hazing requirements.

Annual Transparency Requirement

In compliance with federal and state law, LLU will maintain a publicly accessible Campus Hazing Transparency Report on its website, summarizing hazing incidents and outcomes involving student organizations and updating the report at least twice each year.
