The United States is in the midst of a chronic disease epidemic. Diabetes has increased around forty-fold in the last five decades. Eighty percent of health care effort and cost is related to chronic disease.  Eighty percent of chronic disease is directly caused by lifestyle choices.  If the diseases are caused by lifestyle choices, shouldn’t the treatments be lifestyle related as well?  Yet the average physician receives very little formal education in nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and other core evidence-based lifestyle medicine interventions. Loma Linda University Health is different!  We want to treat the root causes of disease as well.

The purpose of the Lifestyle Medicine Education Concentration* is to give residents the tools, knowledge and skills to practice Lifestyle Medicine (LM).

*In Family Medicine and Internal Medicine this is the Lifestyle Medicine Track and for Preventive Medicine residents, this is integrated into their residency requirements.

Educational Goals:

  1. Complete the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC).
  2. Become board eligible in Lifestyle Medicine
  3. Apply LM skills to personal health and patient care

Didactic Component (40 HOURS)

Residents will complete the 40 LMRC didactic modules.  For the 2021-2022 academic year, these will be available via PowerPoint presentation videos from fellow residents**.  In July 2022, the didactic component will be available in an online learning management system from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) that you will be granted access to.

***In Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine residencies, the presentations are integrated into residency didactics.

Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (20 HOURS)

You will participate and/or observe a group program such as MOVE! at the VA, CHIP, The Dean Ornish program, McDougall program, Canyon Ranch, or Weimar, etc.

Group Visits (20 HOURS)

Group visits consist of a group observation, recording and/or facilitating.  This may occur at the same time or separately from an ITLC program.

Application Activities (60 HOURS)

Complete 60 hours of asynchronous application, designed to be presented over your residency. The practicum component enables residents to clearly demonstrate ongoing exposure to and use of the principles of lifestyle medicine in the clinical setting with patients.
