Over 100 full-time Department of Medicine faculty are involved in our teaching program. All faculty members at our three training facilities have faculty appointments at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Our staff includes general internists and internists in a wide range of subspecialties.

Sonny Lee, MD, FACP

Sonny Lee, MD, FACP

Program Director

Dr. Lee received his M.D. from New York Medical College. After completing internship and residency in the Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics (Med-Peds) Residency at Loma Linda University, he stayed on as faculty. He has been Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics since 2003 and is participating in the Maintenance of Certification for both the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as the American Board of Pediatrics. He has been involved in Graduate and Undergraduate Medical Education since completing residency in 2003 and has served as Associate Program Director and Program Director of the Med-Peds Residency prior to assuming the role of Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Loma Linda University. He remains passionate about resident education and, in particular, relishes assisting residents achieve whatever career goal they have in mind. He is married with two daughters. He loves sports of all kinds (watching, playing) but particularly loves watching his daughters play softball and soccer.

Hana Kazbour, MD

Dr. Kazbour is originally from Dearborn, Michigan. She obtained her medical degree at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center.  She stayed an extra year as a chief resident at Riverside University Health System. Afterwards, she worked in Chicago for a year, to be closer to family.  She returned to Loma Linda University Medical Center and has been a faculty member for three years. She enjoys being a direct hospitalist, but the most rewarding part of her job is being a teaching attending on the medicine wards and at SACH clinic.  She is passionate about teaching and providing mentorship to residents and medical students alike. She particularly likes to teach bedside ultrasound and procedures. She is a strong advocate for residents, especially when it comes to their learning experience and wellness. In her time off, she enjoys exercising, hiking, eating at new restaurants, but most of all, traveling.

Denise Townsend, MD

Denise Jackson Townsend received her MD degree from the University of Florida School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatric medicine. After completing residency, she joined the Faculty Medical Practice at LLU and practiced there in the outpatient office and also covered the inpatient resident MOD service. During this time, she also held several other positions, Medical Director for the Internal Medicine Continuity clinic at Loma Linda, Medical Director for Loma Linda University Hospice and Medical Director for Loma Linda University Home Health. After working at Loma Linda University for 19 yrs, she transitioned to the Loma Linda VA where she has worked for the past 8 years, first in the outpatient setting and currently as a hospitalist. During her time at the VA, she has also worked with residents and medical students on the MOD inpatient service. She enjoys working with residents and medical students and is passionate in regards to promoting healthy lifestyles for patients and housestaff. She is married to Michael A. Townsend, and they have 3 daughters.

Minho Yu, DO

Dr. Yu received his Bachelor's degree from UCSD, went on to medical school at the Western University of Health Sciences, in Pomona, CA. He was a star resident in the internal medicine program at Loma Linda, and later served as a chief medical resident at Riverside University Health Systems Medical Center during the 2007-2008 academic year. He has been an attending physician there since that time. In 2011, he was appointed to the APD position and has served in that capacity very well. Dr. Yu is dedicated to the development of residents as skilled physicians, and emphasizes evidence-based care. Our office receives much unsolicited praise for his teaching ability as an attending on the RUHSMC ward service. Additionally, he leads teaching sessions at the Simulation Lab on campus.

Laren Tan, MD

Department Chair

Loma Linda University School of Medicine has selected Laren Tan, MD, as chair of the Department of Medicine.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Cytology at Loma Linda University School of Allied Health in 2003 and his Doctor of Medicine at Loma Linda University in 2009. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of California at Davis. He completed his MBA in healthcare management with an additional dual emphasis in strategic leadership and innovation from the Tom and Vi Zapara School of Business at La Sierra University. Tan is board certified in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and internal medicine of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Tan, who joined the School of Medicine faculty in 2015, is an associate professor of medicine, and currently serves as assistant dean for continuing medical education. “Dr. Tan’s enthusiasm, passion and leadership will continue to grow the Department of Medicine to high achievements in clinical care, medical education, and research excellence,” said Tamara Thomas, MD, dean of Loma Linda University of School of Medicine. “This is a critical time in medicine as California faces numerous challenges, and we look forward to working with him on strategies to educate, recruit and train doctors to serve our communities.”

Tan also serves in numerous leadership roles including director of Loma Linda University Comprehensive Program for Obstructive Airway Diseases, associate director for LLUH Advance Lung Disease Center, associate chief for innovation and growth, and medical director of creative innovation communication and branding for Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group. Tan has been the principal investigator and author of multiple articles in scientific journals and has presented at sessions of the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, California Thoracic Society, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology and the American Lung Association.

Lawrence Loo, MD

CCC Director and Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine

Dr. Loo received his M.D. degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and subsequently completed his Internal Medicine residency and Chief Resident year at Loma Linda University and affiliated hospitals. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Primary Care and Faculty Development from Michigan State University. He is currently board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Master in the American College of Physicians. He maintains staff privileges at all three of the major hospital affiliates of the IM residency program including Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), Loma Linda VA Healthcare System (LLVAH), and Riverside University Health System (RUHS). He currently serves as the Vice-Chair for Education and Faculty Development within the Department of Medicine, helping to coordinate the continuum of professional development from medical student education, graduate medical training including the IM residency and fellowships, and continuing medical education. He currently is Professor of Medicine in both the Departments of Medicine and Medical Education. Dr. Loo’s professional career has been as a clinician-educator and his current scholarly activities have focused on the teaching and evaluation of Evidence-based Medicine, Professionalism, and Professional Identity Formation. He immensely enjoys working with students, residents, fellows, and faculty who wish to pursue an academic career in medical education.

Andrew Logan, MD

Andrew Logan received his MD degree from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Loma Linda University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine. After residency he completed a chief resident year at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Loma Linda. Following this he worked at the Loma Linda University Hospital before joining the Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic and serving as an Associate Program Director. He loves working with residents and students. Outside of the clinic you may find him exploring photography, woodworking or home improvement projects.

Peter Demuth, MD

Primary Care Track Lead Faculty

Peter DeMuth grew up in Pennsylvania and received his medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine. He met his wife, a California native, in medical school and has lived here ever since. He completed internal medicine residency at Loma Linda and stayed on as an inpatient/outpatient hybrid physician. In 2021, Dr. DeMuth assumed the role of Primary Care Lead for the residency program. He enjoys training residents at FMG clinic and hospital wards as well as designing outpatient residency curricula for the unique demands of primary care. Outside of medicine, Dr. DeMuth can be found running, hiking, or gardening near his home in Riverside.
