If you or a loved one needs care for a stroke, aneurysm or other condition affecting blood vessels in the brain, our surgeons can help. We focus on preventing disability and restoring you to full function.

In an emergency, our comprehensive stroke center is here for you day and night. If your condition is less urgent, we’ll use advanced testing to precisely pinpoint areas of concern. Either way, you’ll have a personalized treatment plan and a dedicated team to help you before, during and after surgery.

Why Choose Us for Cerebrovascular Care

  • Skilled in microsurgical techniques: Microsurgery is performed on areas that can only be seen with a microscope, like small blood vessels. Our surgeons use these techniques to help spare healthy brain tissue and reduce your recovery time.
  • Comprehensive stroke center: We provide a level of stroke care unmatched in the region, with multiple certifications from trusted independent agencies.
  • Advanced technology: Your treatment includes technologies like 3D mapping tools, which guide your surgery with precision. You also have access to the latest techniques and devices (like new coils and stents) for improved treatment outcomes.
  • All the specialists you need: You get the combined expertise of neurologists, neurosurgeons and other brain specialists in one place. Our experts work together to improve your quality of life and provide you with the best possible outcomes.
  • Innovative research: Our researchers are known internationally for pioneering new techniques and devices. You may qualify for our clinical trials offering new surgical devices and treatments.
"I had migraines that halted my recovery. Dr. De Los Reyes suggested the removal of two nerves in my brain. After surgery, I no longer experience headaches! I can now progress in my recovery thanks to the staff at Loma Linda University Health."

Conditions We Treat

  • Arteriovenous malformation (AVM), an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in your head that disrupts normal blood and oxygen flow
  • Blood vessel disorders
  • Brain aneurysm, a weakness in the wall of a brain artery that bulges and fills with blood
  • Brain vascular malformation, abnormal growth of blood vessels present at birth that alters blood flow to the brain
  • Carotid artery disease, a narrowing of the carotid arteries that carry blood from the heart to the head through the sides of the neck
  • Cavernoma, a cluster of abnormal blood vessels with small bubbles filled with blood
  • Chronic subdural hematoma, a collection of blood on the outer covering of the brain’s surface (dura)
  • Dural arteriovenous fistula, abnormal connection (fistula) between an artery and vein in the dura-mater, the lining between the brain and the skull
  • Hemangioblastoma, a benign and highly vascular brain tumor
  • Idiopathic hypertension, high blood pressure of unknown cause
  • Moyamoya disease, a condition in which arteries in the brain narrow and can lead to blockages that cause stroke or seizures
  • Stroke, lack of oxygen to the brain due to a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or an artery that ruptures and bleeds (hemorrhagic stroke)
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA), a mini-stroke caused by temporary disruption in blood supply to the brain

Services We Offer

  • Brain surgery, to remove benign and malignant tumors, treat blood vessel malformations or treat an aneurysm
  • Advanced neurologic monitoring devices, to observe function during surgery
  • Implanted devices, which can help prevent aneurysms from causing further damage

What to Expect

Assessment and Diagnosis

You’ll begin by meeting with a surgeon, who will ask you questions about your medical history and evaluate your symptoms. An accurate diagnosis will help determine your surgical treatment options, so we may recommend imaging of your brain and neck. Imaging may include CT scans and MRIs, which help pinpoint the location of abnormal areas. You may also need a cerebral angiogram, which provides images of blood vessels to detect problems (such as an aneurysm) and malformations of the brain.

Treatment

We’ll help you understand your treatment plan and choose the best options available to you, including the following procedures:

  • 3D image-guided surgery, which guides your surgeon with high-precision brain imaging technologies
  • Femoral bypass surgery, to treat a blocked femoral artery
  •  Keyhole surgeries, which use minimally invasive techniques (those with fewer, smaller incisions) to remove brain tumors
  • Micro-coiling, where a coil is implanted into a smaller aneurysm to block blood from entering the aneurysm and weakening the blood vessel
  • Woven EndoBridge (WEB) implant, which prevents blood from flowing into and rupturing an aneurysm wider than two millimeters

While it can be stressful to undergo surgery, it may be the best option to improve your physical and mental functioning. Surgery may also be necessary to save your life in an emergency. No matter your condition, you can rest assured our surgeons have the experience needed for your care.
