The urology residency training program is dedicated to developing the complete urologist through an integrated program of extensive clinical experience, exposure to different delivery systems, thoughtful incorporation of a professional attitude befitting of a calling rather than a job and academic activities including conferences, lectures and research. Resident responsibility for quality patient care is emphasized and responsibility for that care progresses, under supervision through the residency.  The technical experience progresses from endoscopic diagnostic modalities, minor urological procedures and surgical assisting, to the performance of all types of major urological surgery including robotic and minimally invasive procedures. Senior residents are given additional teaching and administrative responsibilities including the supervision of medical students and more junior residents.  Individual research activities are encouraged.

Clinical

You will develop a strong urologic clinical and basic science knowledge base that will allow the resident to choose the appropriate diagnostic tools and management for a specific urological problem.   This foundation is intended to place the resident in a position to continue to build their knowledge through life long learning.   This base should enable them to incorporate the continued changes in technical surgical procedures and new medical discoveries into their practice of urology.

You will progressively increase experience in patient management to appropriately diagnose and treat urologic problems in an effective, timely and cost conscious manner by the end of your residency. You will learn to act independently in clinical decision-making and therapeutic management.

Progressively increase your surgical skills so that you will be able to independently perform all major standard urologic procedures by the end of your residency.

Research

Have a full understanding of the research process. Gain the ability to analyze current literature and incorporate scientifically valid results into your urologic practice.

Demonstrate competence in hypothesis formation, data collection, and analysis methodology.

Be strongly encouraged to perform your own clinical or basic science research project, which will be submitted for publication by the end of your residency. You will also be encouraged to present this scientific research project to a group of peers.

Teaching

Progressively learn how to teach and impart medical and technical knowledge to others during your residency.

Develop the ability to teach all aspects of urology to any person or group of people with the desire to further their understanding of urology.

Academic

Participate in an academic course of study during each year of residency. This will enable you to perform strongly on the national, annual in-service exam in urology.

Gain the academic knowledge to pass the qualifying exam of the American Board of Urology by the end of your residency and position you to pass the oral certifying exam after 2 years of urology practice.

The academic course of study will assist you in your clinical decision making process and  in developing therapeutic strategies for your individual patients.

Personal

Learn to lead a balanced life devoted to patient service, professional excellence, personal growth and continued improvement.  Part of being a successful urologic surgeon is learning to work efficiently with high quality and to communicate professionally to create a career that will lead to accomplishment and satisfaction.  This satisfaction will be magnified by learning to balance personal with professional life and to maintain high quality relationships, both personally and professionally.  When you matriculate from this program, the goal is to have been imprinted with a sense of responsibility to strive to reach your full potential and to appreciate the importance of life balance in a successful career.
