Our program is known for its rigorous clinical training, with functionally integrated academic and clinical phases. In addition to selecting from a variety of interesting rotations, you’ll be able to choose academic and practicum opportunities for your education objectives. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in clinical and core residency training activities while simultaneously taking tuition-waived MPH courses.

The program’s curriculum ultimately prepares you for a career in a wide variety of settings.

CURRICULUM BY YEAR

PGY - 2

All PGY-2 residents without a master’s degree in public health (MPH) or equivalent attend the School of Public Health to obtain one. Your tuition will be waived for an MPH in environmental and occupational health or population medicine. Required subjects include:

  • Biostatistics
  • Epidemiology
  • Health services management and administration
  • Environmental health
  • Toxicology
  • Industrial hygiene
  • Risk assessment
  • Social and behavioral influences on health

  • LLU Occ Med Clinic - three half days per week
  • VA Hospital - six half days per week
    • Occupational Medicine Clinic
    • Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R)
    • Minor surgery
    • Ophthalmology
    • Audiology
    • Elective radiology 
  • Teaching conference and MPH classwork - one half day per week
  • Elective - one or two days per week, or in a block of time (such as for a week or a month at a time)
  • Vacation - four weeks and an additional week for CME (five total)
  • MPH classes

PGY - 3

  • LLU Occupational Medicine Clinic - three half days per week. Electives include:
    • Preventive medicine
    • Travel medicine
    • Employee wellness 
  • VA Hospital - six half days per week
    • Occupational Medicine Clinic
    • Orthopaedic surgery
    • Elective pulmonology
    • Elective Q1
    • Elective research time
    • Elective addiction medicine
  • Teaching conference and MPH classwork - one half day per week
  • Elective OSHA or CDC rotation - two months
  • Elective - one or two days per week, or in a block of time (such as for a week or a month at a time)
  • Senior project - half day or one day per week towards the end of the PGY-3 year
  • WOEMA and OSHA conferences

Didactics and Educational Activities

Didactics are tailored to fit your needs. Didactic opportunities include weekly grand rounds lectures by field experts, suture and eye exam labs, weekly half-day teaching conference and site visits.

Grand Rounds

You’ll attend grand rounds for both preventive medicine and occupational medicine. Every week, you’ll join preventive medicine residents at four hours of teaching conferences.
