Don’t let your nerve pain keep you from enjoying the summer holidays! Celebrate this Fourth of July by taking steps to regain independence from your neuropathy.
Be it a holiday, vacation or everyday activities, no one wants to feel hindered from the things that matter because of their pain. As we celebrate the Fourth of July, let’s not forget that freedom from neuropathy is achievable. With simple changes and adjustments to your everyday norm, you too can lead a healthy, meaningful and independent life free from pain.
Consider following these three steps to start your journey to improving your nerve pain and living the best life for you.
Although more than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy have been identified, the list of causes is much shorter. While some pain can be genetic or trauma-induced, generally speaking, most neuropathic pain causes are within your control. The most common causes are metabolic, meaning those involving sugars, glucose, insulin, hormonal, nutritional, etc. Other common causes include side effects to medications or treatments such as chemotherapy, vascular and blood problems, disorders and autoimmune diseases.
To discover what is causing your neuropathy, schedule an appointment with your physician to discuss your symptoms. He or she may perform a few exams to diagnose you with nerve pain before referring you to a neurologist and preventative medicine specialist for further care.
Potentially the most difficult step of the process, this one involves an honest heart-to-heart with yourself. Are you getting the exercise you should or making time for a quick walk after a long day? Have you been spending quality time with family and friends? Could you be eating healthier foods? Are your stress levels high?
In the hustle and bustle that is life, making time for our health is undoubtedly the easiest thing to put off until we can’t anymore. If you are constantly on the go, breaking these habits won’t happen overnight. Take small steps, set goals to walk each day after work or to eat one less pasta dish a week. Maybe it is even as simple as making sure you’re drinking enough water. Whatever it looks like to you, commit to taking the steps to a healthier lifestyle, because your lifestyle has the most impact on your nerve pain.
This final step is also one of the most crucial. Even though neuropathic pain can be partially managed by your lifestyle, it’s still important to seek out a physical therapist or specialist who has had training in bringing circulation back to the nerves. This individual may have several recommendations on how to medically best reduce your pain, including homeopathic, machines, or acupuncture, all of which may provide some relief for some people with neuropathy. He or she may also recommend Intraneural Facilitation or INF™, which can prove to be an effective way to restore blood flow to damaged nerves and eliminate pain that patients experience. Be sure to discuss all these options with your physician to determine the best treatment for you.
From all of us here at the Neuropathic Therapy Center, we wish you a safe and fun Fourth of July! Get outside, eat a nutritious dish and enjoy those fireworks with your friends and family.
If you’re suffering from nerve pain, our Neuropathic Therapy Center may be able to help using a breakthrough physical therapy treatment called Intraneural Facilitation or INF.™ For more information and to schedule an evaluation, call 909-558-6799 or request information online.
