Loma Linda University Medical Center is a fully accredited center for Clinical Pastoral Education. All levels of training are offered on a year-round schedule. Training takes place at the Loma Linda University Medical Center.
The Clinical Pastoral Education program at Loma Linda University Medical Center will give you the knowledge and tools you need to function effectively in today's pastoral care ministry. It will also prepare you for your future as a chaplain, a pastoral caregiver in church and other ministry opportunities.
In this CPE program, you learn from your patients, your peers, your supervisor and your experiences within the action-reflection model of learning. Carefully-chosen didactic topics and role play opportunities, which include presentations by healthcare professionals, LLUMC staff chaplains and other educators, supplement the process.
The curriculum components of the program embody the mission and values of The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., Loma Linda University Health System, and Chaplain Services.
Each unit of CPE is at least 100 hours of group and individual supervision, in addition to no less than 300 clinical hours, for a total of 400 hours. A half unit consists of at least 60 hours of group and individual supervision, in addition to no less than 180 clinical hours, for a total of 240 hours. The curriculum is based upon 2020 Standards established by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
The CPE program is accredited by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE) is a professional association committed to advancing experience-based theological education for seminarians, clergy and lay persons of diverse cultures, ethnic groups, and faith traditions."
The CPE students have opportunities for productive professional interchange with representatives of the multi-disciplinary health care team. The students are integrated into the spiritual care teams at LLUMC. Students are received with hospitality and incorporated into the department through the formal processes of orientation, continuing education events, and other informal educational processes.
The nature of professional interchange will become the subject of student and supervisory negotiations around learning goals and opportunities for interdisciplinary consultation and dialogue within an ecclesiastical environment.
We offer several Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs throughout the year, including a Winter/Spring Extended Unit (February through May), a Summer Intensive Unit (June to August), and a Fall Extended Unit (September through January). We also provide Supervisory Education for those pursuing advanced training in pastoral supervision.
