Our program aims to teach aspiring electrophysiologists to perform the entire breadth of electrophysiology procedures safely. Our curriculum is meticulously structured to provide a comprehensive and immersive training experience, ensuring our fellows are well-prepared for a successful career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Curriculum Highlights

  • Comprehensive ACGME and ABIM Alignment: Our curriculum is meticulously designed to meet the rigorous certification requirements set forth by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) and ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) for clinical cardiac electrophysiology.
  • Autonomous Clinical Experience: During our inpatient consult rotation and outpatient ambulatory sessions, our fellows are encouraged to take the lead, fostering autonomy and enhancing their clinical decision-making skills. Direct interaction with our faculty facilitates this learning approach, allowing fellows to develop independence in clinical judgment.
  • Hands-On Procedural Training: We prioritize hands-on training for procedures, providing fellows with a stepwise progression to proficiency. Within the first year, most of our fellows meet the procedural volume requirements. This approach ensures that our fellows graduate feeling confident in performing routine EP procedures and are well-prepared for more complex procedures such as VT ablation and lead extraction, which they focus on extensively.
  • Fellow-Driven Conferences: Our robust conference schedule is predominantly fellow-driven and faculty-facilitated, creating an interactive and engaging learning environment. The curriculum encompasses:
  • Basic Lecture Series: Kickstarting the summer with foundational knowledge.
  • Case Conferences: Delving into real-world cases to enhance clinical reasoning.
  • Journal Clubs: Analyzing the latest research and developments in the field.
  • Research Conferences: Encouraging fellows to initiate and develop research and quality improvement projects.
  • Mortality/Morbidity Conferences: Reviewing cases to identify opportunities for improvement and learning..
  • Research and Publication Requirement: Each fellow is encouraged and expected to initiate and develop research and quality improvement projects. As a fellowship requirement, every fellow must complete a high-quality research paper suitable for publication. This emphasis on research equips our graduates with the skills and experience to contribute to the advancement of clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Clinical Rotations

Ambulatory Clinic

Our fellows dedicate half a day each week to the dedicated EP clinical, where they engage with a diverse mix of new and follow-up patients. Many of these patients are referred from other electrophysiologists in the community, providing exposure to a wide array of cases.

Inpatient Consults

The remaining 1 week of each cycle is dedicated to inpatient consults, primarily at Loma Linda University Medical Center. During this time, our fellows assume a central role in managing patients with complex arrhythmia issues, actively participating in clinical decision-making and fostering autonomy.

Procedural Emphasis

Our fellowship program places a strong emphasis on procedural experience. Fellows spend 4 out of 5 weeks engaged in various electrophysiology procedures, ensuring they develop expertise in this critical aspect of the field.

Research and Quality Improvement

We actively encourage our fellows to engage in research and quality improvement initiatives. Fellows have the opportunity to contribute to abstracts and manuscripts for publication, including case reports, review articles, and original studies. This involvement enriches their academic experience and contributes to the advancement of clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Tailored Procedure Weeks

Fellows experience dedicated procedure weeks, during which they exclusively focus on performing electrophysiology procedures. Case selection is customized to align with their level of experience and individual interests. Fellows take on the full spectrum of patient care, from pre-procedure preparation to post-procedure discharge, closely collaborating with attending physicians.
