Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition characterized by the thickening (hypertrophy) of the heart muscle, which can affect how well the heart fills and pumps blood to the rest of the body causing shortness of breath, chest pain, and fainting.
Scar tissue can form with extreme thickening of the heart muscle as well as abnormal muscle cells which potentially increase the risk of dangerous heart rhythms and sudden cardiac death. HCM is an inherited condition, meaning it can be passed on to family members and is often linked to identified genetic mutations in 50-60% of cases.
Fortunately, there are effective treatment options for all types of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – from patients with no symptoms, to patients with shortness of breath and chest pain with activity to those patients with advanced heart failure. Treatment may include medications, procedures or surgeries to decrease the thickness of heart muscles, devices to prevent sudden cardiac death, and even heart transplant if needed.
HCM is a chronic disease that can get worse over time. Our team of experts is committed to your care every step of the way, from accurate diagnosis to providing a comprehensive approach to help you effectively manage this complex condition.
