Description of Clinical Training:

Physics residents complete 8 clinical rotations of 3 months each. A list of tasks to be accomplished is assigned at the beginning of each rotation. Tasks to be performed at Loma Linda, Beaumont and Murrieta campuses include the following but are not limited to

  • Machine QA ( LINAC and Proton Therapy): Daily, Monthly and Annual QA
  • LINAC commissioning
  • Treatment Planning Commissioning
  • Patient treatment planning ( conventional and proton therapy)
  • Weekly chart checks
  • Patient specific quality assurance ( IMRT QA and proton physical calibrations)
  • Special Procedures ( TBI, SRS ,SBRT, ocular treatments, Sr-90 treatments)
  • LDR Brachytherapy
  • In-vivo dosimetry, therapy patient equipment support
  • Imaging QA
    • CBCT/OBI 
    • PET/CT
    • MRI
    • kV and Films

Residents must participate in the following ongoing tasks:

  • Attend physics group meetings
  • Attend department treatment planning conferences
  • Attend M&M conferences
  • Attend physics and department QI meetings
  • Attend department seminars
  • Give department seminars
  • Complete reading assignments for each rotation
  • Give presentations to the physics team on assigned topics
  • Attend special lectures arranged to supplement clinical training
  • Attend physics lectures for radiation oncology residents (optional)
  • Attend radiation biology lectures for radiation oncology residents(optional)
  • Attend treatment planning lectures for dosimetry students(optional)
  • Attend biostatistics lectures for radiation oncology residents (optional)
