Happy New Year 2019 from all of us here at the Neuropathic Therapy Center. The new year often comes with new beginnings and new resolutions but also new challenges. Whether you’ve been living with it for years or you’re just newly dealing with symptoms, life with chronic nerve pain can present daily challenges.

Here are three tips to help combat the challenges and face 2019 with a positive handle on your nerve pain.

Stay active

It may be difficult to want to socialize, exercise or even leave your home when your nerve pain is severe. However, doing activities such as visiting with loved ones, taking a walk or doing a leisure activity can help you shift focus from your neuropathy to something enjoyable. Developing a low-impact exercise routine such as swimming or light weight lifting can help you become healthier and reduce nerve pain. Do your best to keep moving whenever and wherever you can.

Prepare for stressful situations

Whether it’s facing a new job, dealing with finances, or that next family get-together, stressful and challenging scenarios are bound to arise. It’s important to be aware of when you are or will be facing stress, due to the ability of stress to potentially exacerbate nerve pain. Know your limits and what triggers your stress and anxiety levels. Have a method of dealing with times of challenge and frustration. Some recommendations we have include going outdoors, taking part in one of your favorite hobbies, listening to soothing music, learning to say no, avoiding procrastination, exercising, writing and reducing your caffeine intake. Preparing for and avoiding stress as much as possible will help in managing your nerve pain.

Find support

It can be very helpful to seek and accept the support from family and friends when dealing with nerve pain. Consider becoming a member of a chronic pain support group — find people who have similar struggles to confide in. These groups may provide valuable information on new techniques to cope and handle neuropathy issues.

Let’s face this new year of opportunities head on and celebrate the new adventures it will bring.
