Combined Anesthesiology & Internal Medicine Residency Program

Overview

The Loma Linda University Departments of Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine have joined educational efforts to offer a combined integrated training program in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology. This combined program is five years in length and will allow for the development of physicians who are fully qualified and board certified in both specialties.

Loma Linda University is one of only three programs nationwide to offer this innovative combined training experience.

The delivery of health care is undergoing rapid change. The physician of the future will be expected to demonstrate a much wider skill set than previously required. Expected skills will include the consistent delivery of evidence-based, cost-effective care; an expanded knowledge of the principles of patient safety and quality improvement; care coordination; system redesign; and team leadership. Graduates of this program will be uniquely qualified to develop careers focused on the management and treatment of complex adult diseases, severe chronic illnesses, and perioperative care. The strengths of both internal medicine and anesthesiology complement each other providing a quality educational experience that enables the trainee to become a leader in the medical field.

The curricular components of the combined program conform to the program requirements for accreditation in by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology, including both the common and specialty specific program ACGME requirements. The curriculum design assures an organized educational experience and continuum of training throughout the residency program. Additional details for combined training in internal medicine and anesthesiology can be accessed through both the ABA and ABIM websites.

The strong belief is that graduates of this program will be highly recruited by academic teaching centers, health care organizations, and physician recruitment agencies to fill needed roles within the health care industry, particularly in the areas of perioperative medicine and care coordination, process improvement, and physician leadership.
