We’re proud of our division’s successful track record training the next generation of vascular surgeons. Our curriculum is designed to help you become a skilled, successful, and board certified vascular surgeon.

The curriculum features a vast array of experiences vital to your training, including cases, didactics, conferences, grand rounds, SCORE, and VSCORE. Your first 18 months focus on core surgical rotations, with 12 months that may be a combination of General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, and a final 30 months concentrated in Vascular Surgery.

Curriculum Highlights

  • Semi-annual reviews with the program director: You’ll meet with the program director twice a year to ensure you’re progressing according to your educational goals.
  • Fluid, on-going feedback: We believe feedback is crucial to the growth and success of our entire team. We foster an environment of consistent, healthy feedback between residents and faculty, encouraging questions and constructive discussions.
  • Educational conferences: Weekly and monthly conferences span a variety of educational topics. Each one provides you a new opportunity to learn, discuss and connect with peers, and practice your skills.

Curriculum by Year

PGY - 1

During PGY-1, you’ll gain experience in the evaluation and management of the inpatient and outpatient general and vascular surgical diseases. You will:

  • Build a foundation of knowledge for the basic science underpinning of surgical disease
  • Understand principles of perioperative assessment and risk stratification of surgical patients
  • Become familiar with diagnostic modalities used in vascular surgery
  • Learn procedural skills commonly required in the care of vascular surgical patients

PGY - 2

PGY-2 builds upon the knowledge and experience you gained in PGY-1. You will:

  • Become proficient in the management of the critically ill surgical patient
  • Master principles of perioperative assessment and risk-stratification of surgical patients
  • Become adept with diagnostic modalities used in vascular surgery
  • Improve technical skills commonly required in the care of vascular surgical patients

PGY - 3

You will become adept at the evaluation and management of the inpatient and outpatient vascular surgical diseases in PGY-3. You will:

  • Begin to establish a leadership style and guide the team effectively in day-to-day function
  • Become proficient with diagnostic modalities used in vascular surgery
  • Refine your operative skills, including open and endovascular techniques in the care of vascular surgery patients.

PGY - 4

PGY-4 continues your mastery of vascular surgical diseases, while increasing your experience in independence and leadership. You will:

  • Take on a leadership role as the chief on a service, interacting with the team and other services to provide quality care for the vascular surgery patients
  • Become proficient with diagnostic modalities used in vascular surgery
  • Develop proficiency in more complex operative procedures (including open and endovascular techniques) and begin to function independently in the operating room with supervision

PGY - 5

During your final year, you will:

  • Be on a leadership role as the chief on a service, interacting with the team and other services to provide quality care for the vascular surgery patients
  • Master diagnostic modalities used in vascular surgery
  • Develop proficiency in more complex operative procedures including open and endovascular techniques
  • Be entrusted to function independently in the operating room
