Cornea and External Disease Fellowship

The Loma Linda University Cornea, External Diseases & Refractive Surgery fellowship offers training in the study of diseases of the cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery. Cornea fellow will gain experience in the faculty clinics, as well as independent patient care provided in the fellows’ own clinic. Cornea fellow also serves as the primary liaison for the cornea consult service and participates in ocular trauma call for the Loma Linda University Medical Center as well as the children’s hospital along with cornea faculty.

Fellows will gain surgical experience performing independent and supervised surgery with cornea faculty and with Loma Linda University ophthalmology residents. Refractive procedures will be performed under faculty supervision using the VISX/IntraLase platform. Fellows will also supervise patient care, and perform surgery in the cornea clinic of the Riverside County Hospital as well as Loma Linda University. The fellow will be exposed to complex ocular procedures including penetrating and endothelial keratoplasties (DSEK/DMEK), complex cataracts, sutured intraocular lenses, use of amniotic membranes, keratoprostheses, anterior segment reconstruction as well as refractive procedures.

Fellows attend and participate in educational conferences such as departmental grand rounds, journal clubs and wet labs. Opportunities for teaching through lectures and direct interactions with ophthalmology residents, as well as for the pursuit of clinical research are available.

The LLU Cornea Fellowship is a one-year program. A full PGY-5 stipend, including benefits are provided. Applicants must obtain an unrestricted California Medical License for billing and credentialing purposes and must be board eligible. Applicants must register for the ophthalmology fellowship match online through SF Match. The deadline for completing the application process is October 30 of the year prior to the start of the fellowship.

Pediatric Fellowship

The Loma Linda University Eye Institute offers a fellowship opportunity for candidates interested in receiving training in the care of children with eye and vision problems as well as adults with strabismus.

Through close daily interaction with faculty, the fellow will gain broad clinical training in the practice of pediatric ophthalmology, including the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Amblyopia
  • Strabismus
  • Pediatric glaucoma
  • Pediatric cataract surgery
  • Nasolacrimal duct procedures
  • Congenital ptosis
  • Retinopathy of prematurity
  • and pediatric ocular trauma

In addition, fellows are involved in all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of adults with strabismus.

The pediatric ophthalmology fellow serves as the chief liaison for the pediatric ophthalmology consult service at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and participates in ocular trauma call for the Loma Linda University Medical Center as well as the children’s hospital.

Fellows attend and participate in educational conferences such as departmental grand rounds, journal clubs and invited lectures as well as a monthly pediatric ophthalmology service conference. Numerous opportunities for teaching through lectures and direct interactions with ophthalmology residents, as well as for the pursuit of clinical research are available to our fellows.

The LLU Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship is a one-year program approved by the AUPO Fellowship Compliance Committee. A full PGY-5 stipend, including benefits, is provided.
