Community Outreach & Injury Prevention

Alcohol, Drug and Violence Intervention

Alcohol is a factor in 50% of severe trauma injuries and 40% of fatal vehicle crashes. To address this, we provide intervention therapy to patients admitted to the hospital for alcohol-related accidents or injuries. To address violence in our community, our trauma team also practices hospital-based violence intervention. We aim to identify risk factors for violence and support change.

Fall Prevention

Falls account for 30% of our trauma patient volume. They can lead to injury and long-term challenges. When a patient is at high risk for falls or has already fallen, our fall prevention team provides education for both patient and family. The team also connects the family to outside resources, including the nationally-recognized fall prevention course Matter of Balance.

Acute Stress Disorder Screenings

Among the trauma patients we encounter daily, 40 - 80% experience problems related to drug abuse, psychological disorders, acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and/or depression. We are committed to identifying patients at risk for acute stress disorder and providing appropriate resources for support.

Stop the Bleed Program

Hemorrhage (rapid blood loss) accounts for 25% of all trauma deaths worldwide. When someone is injured, controlling blood loss as quickly as possible is critical. One way to reduce trauma deaths is to train people how to stop the bleeding. We offer federally-recognized Stop the Bleed courses to teach people how to identify life-threatening bleeding and control blood loss.

Trauma Courses and Programs for Medical Professionals

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course
  • Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) course
  • Head Injury and Trauma – Spine Support Program

Safe Kids Inland Empire

Since 1990, we have taken the lead on Safe Kids Inland Empire. Through this program, we work to reduce childhood injuries from vehicles, sports, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more. Safe Kids Inland Empire is one of 600 state and local Safe Kids chapters that brings together health and safety experts to educate and protect families.

Research

Our Level 1 Trauma Center maintains an active clinical research program. In our research, we develop new care models for critical and complex trauma. Ultimately, this research will improve how trauma patients around the world are treated.
